AMMO WG Teleconference Minutes – 1 May 2019
On 1 May 2019, the Additive Manufacturing Maintenance Operations (AMMO) working group conducted a teleconference with over 45 participants. A summary follows:
Update upcoming AM Workshop 18 – 19 June, Lockheed Martin Global Vision Center – Greg Kilchenstein (OSD-MR) stated that this workshop is a bit different than the two AM Business Model Wargames and last year’s AM Workshop in that the AMMO WG partnered up with the JAMWG to align the working groups with the America Makes Councils.
The Workshop will have five Work Groups with the below subgroups:

America Makes AM Mx and Sustainment Advisory Group Update: Marilyn Gaska, Lockheed Martin, provided the following update:
- Darrell Wallace provided a report on projects in the Maturation of Advanced Manufacturing for Low-Cost Sustainment (MAMLS) program, stating that there are increasing efforts on the tech transition of AM sand casting.
- Conducted AM Workshop planning and the encouragement of industry, academia, and non-profit participation. Also discussed roles such as breakout group leaders and IT.
- Dana Ellis provided an update on the CTMA Blockchain project.
- Dave Siddle provided an America Makes update, including an operational projects for infrastructure slide.
- Provided a joint DoD AM Roadmap Update.
- The digital storefront has been enhanced with a streamlined user interface.
- NCDMM Summit next week in Blairsville, PA on May 8 – 9.
- TRX Qualification and Certification Meeting on 16-17 July in Wichita, KS.
- ASTM is talking about adding cold spray to standards.
- Next Monthly Teleconference is on May 18.

Brief Overview M1 Abrams AM Project – Tony Delgado (DLA) discussed a project between the Marine Corps Systems Command, John Hopkins University, and SPAWAR to AM print an M1 impeller. The impeller, which is a rotational metal part, was originally manufactured through casting and has a long lead-time from a sole source. The objective was to test the procurement system and track costs throughout the process. The impeller was reverse engineered and a 3D PDF format TDP was developed that includes 3D drawings, manufacturing data, CAD files, feasibility data, and performance results. Twelve impellers were successfully manufactured and tested. The next steps are data storage configuration and part number / serial number tracking.

Supply Chain Modernization – Unmanned Arial System – Dave Cooper (Anglicotech) described the “Pacific Blitz” objectives and scheme of maneuver. The objectives include processing service requests in a field environment using existing Log IT systems; producing parts from that request using organic MLG AM capability under field conditions; demonstrating integrated sUAS Capability in providing rapid, responsive, and flexible sustainment options in support of dispersed and semi-independent operations; and documenting DOTMLPF components required to support the scenario.

Q1. How much post-processing of the steel 316 L is required?
A1. I don’t believe there is much, if any, other than the support structure.
Q2. Is a next step exercising procurement?
A2. We are going to give it a shot here…do a round robin.
Q3. How many impellors were made?
A3. I think there were 12.
Q4. Do you have IP concerns going forward?
A4. No, this was a total reverse engineering effort. No GE Designs were used. The lawyers involved ensured us that there was no infringement of IP.
