Minutes

On 4 November 2020, the Additive Manufacturing Maintenance Operations (AMMO) working group conducted a teleconference with over 60 participants.  A summary follows:

Introduction:  Greg Kilchenstein welcomed the group and stated that the draft AM Instruction is in formal coordination and is on schedule to be issued by late CY20 or early CY21. He noted the considerable effort that OSD(RE) have contributed to making this happen.  He also stated that the final report on the virtual 2020 AM Workshop would be completed by the end of September.

Additive Molding and Composites – Alex Huckstepp (ARRIS Composites) briefed a “next generation composites manufacturing technology” that combines AM and compression molding. He described the process as utilizing 3D stress-vector aligned carbon fiber with a topology optimized part geometry for high performance. Increased scalability is obtained from an end-to-end automated process creating high throughput, high quality molded surfaces and tolerances that are also cost efficient. He presented several examples of fiber optimized complex parts exhibiting lightweight, but strong structures, and a UAV case study.

ASTM Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (COE) – Dr. Mahdi Jamshidinia (ASTM International) provided a refresher of the ASTM AM footprint, and provided detail on the ASTM COE formed in 2018. The COE bridges standards development with R&D and facilitates collaboration and coordination among government, academia, and industry to advance AM standardization and expand capabilities.  He described COE R&D high priority areas and provided an R&D projects overview. He discussed research to standardization, described some AM data initiatives, discussed some workforce training, and informed the audience of the ASTM International Conference on AM Nov 16-20.

America Makes Mx and Sustainment Advisory Group Update – Marilyn Gaska (LMCO) provided an update that included the following:

  1. The September meeting included the following:
    1. The Key Speaker spoke about “Next Level AM Printing”.
    2. John Wilczynski provided an update on AM methods and COVID-19.
  2. Our next AMMSAG meeting is November 19th.
  3. The America Makes Annual Membership Meeting was conducted on 13-14 October. AM business considerations was a focus and Lt Gov Jon Husted provided an Ohio’s State perspective. For more information on the meeting go to the following link:   https://www.americamakes.us/mmx/
  4. Our own Kelly Visconti was recognized as an AM Ambassador due to all the support she has provided AM efforts and AmericaMakes. For more information on the Ambassador Program go to:  https://www.americamakes.us/america-makes-proudly-announces-the-2020-class-of-america-makes-ambassadors/
  5. There is a TRX webinar today, and an AM digital thread meeting this morning.
  6. Nov 11-12 is a Digital Twin (Virtual) Summit
  7. RSO Office supported the USAF AM Olympics two weeks ago.

MxD Update – Frederico Sciammarella described MxD’s “The Hiring Guide: Cybersecurity in Manufacturing” which identifies 247 job roles in cybersecurity for manufacturing, career paths and defines the U.S. ecosystem for cyber talent in manufacturing. He talked about MxD is developing a digital process to proactively connect the U.S. FDA to the medical industry to expedite validation for products during fabrication. Lastly, he described “Pathfinder Phase I” whose goal is to evaluate a standalone 3D printer for compliance against current NIST security controls. The deliverables are: a system security plan, risk assessment report, and a security technical implementation guide matrix.

AM Policy Updates / Highlights – Kelly Visconti (PM2 Strategies in support of OSD(R&E))

  • The DoD AM Strategy which states DoD vision and strategic goals is pending final signature from USD(R&E), Mr. Kratsios.
  • The policy document is through formal coordination and will go to legal review. The end is in sight.
  • The AM Guidebook that was also worked on during the AM Workshop is still a work in progress. We anticipate an initial draft ready by January 2021.
  • The JAMWG is reviewing the 5 Joint Priority List areas in order to take advantage of ongoing work. The 5 areas are:
    • Digital Thread
    • Qualification & Certification
    • Workforce Development
    • Policy and Guidance
    • Communications & Collaboration
  • We are also looking at Service level implementation plans and how they align to strategy and policy.

Next Meeting: – The next AMMO WG call is scheduled for 10:30-12:00 am (Eastern Time) on Wednesday, 2 December 2020.

POC for this action is Ray Langlais, LMI, rlanglais@lmi.org, (571) 633-8019

Q&A

Additive Molding – Alex (ARRIS)

————————–

Q1. Do you have fatigue data on the components you are producing in comparison to those made traditionally from metals?

A1. We have some data. Most is with early customers, so it is not sharable. We are happy to collect the data with others. Please reach out to me directly.

Q2. How are the materials/components inspected to ensure quality?

A2. Things like CT scans but they require experience and are slow. We receive a lot of data from the process, so that reduces the need to inspect. We also have a very automated process.

Q3. Can you discuss the speed at which these components can be compression molded?

A3. Depending on the size and order of the part. It takes a single minute for 1 line / 1 tool.

Q4. Have the compression materials been tested for corrosion or environmental breakdown?

A4. In terms of material, yes. If you select the right matrix, it can be highly corrosion resistant.

Q5. Have any DOD entities express interest and do you have any projects underway with DoD?

A5. Yes, but that is all I say publicly.

ASTM Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence – Dr. Mahdi Jamshidinia (ASTM International)

————————–

Q1. Are you collaborating with ANSI and their effort to publish a compendium of AM standards in partnership with America Makes?

A1. Yes. We have a significant role in the upcoming 2nd AM roadmap.

Q2. How do you deal with the “cart before the horse” scenario that results from ASTM’s materials spec development strategy?  Industry has already developed many proprietary material specs that ASTM is working to create an umbrella for.

A2. I’m not sure there is a “Cart before the horse”. We have a system that covers all the aspects of AM. Test method is one type. There are others that contribute.

Q3. We struggle with data transfer of lattice structures (i.e. Gyroids) due to different geometry kernels (B-Rep, voxel, implicit, etc. Is there a plan for geometry standardization (i.e. STEP)? (Andreas Vlahinos)

A3. One of the projects we funded includes a specification design focused on compression. The data format came up and I can connect you to the team.
