AMMO WG Teleconference Minutes – 3 August 2016
On 3 August, 2016 the Additive Manufacturing Maintenance Operations (AMMO) Working Group conducted a teleconference. A brief summary of the teleconference follows:
Cold Spray Repair of Magnesium Transmission Housings – Bill Harris, Sikorksy Aircraft discussed their use of cold spray repair techniques on transmission housings. The repaired parts become newly available spares.
AM Repair / Additive Repair – Dr. Judith Schneider, from University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), and Dr. Hyatt, DMG Mori presented several additive manufacturing repair methods and projects that they have been working on.
Discuss Successes with Cold Spray to Restore Dimensions to Worn and Corroded High Value Components – Conrad Macy FRCSW, described the use of cold spray techniques at FRC-SW including several examples of successful restoration of worn/corroded components. It was suggested that Conrad examine the possibility of getting on the CSAT 2017 agenda. Contact Victor Champagne or go to the coldsprayactionteam.com website for additional information.
Friction Stir Technology for Large Volume Parts – Ben Moses discussed friction stir technology and how it could be applied to parts manufactured in large volumes.
America Makes Maintenance and Sustainment Advisory Group Update – Marilyn Gaska, Lockheed Martin, described an AM effort in Phase I involving the maturation of low-cost sustainment. More information will be included in an AM press release. Marilyn mentioned Frederico Sciammarella’s Value Chain Workshop and a plan for a follow-up. The Value Chain is a focus area of the AM Roadmap aimed at driving technological advancements that enable step change improvements in end-to-end value chain cost and time to market for additive manufacturing produced products. Marilyn also mentioned that David Coyle provided an AM collaboration update. AM is looking for anyone conducting additive manufacturing training classes.
2016 DoD Maintenance Symposium – Greg Kilchenstein (OSD-MPP) provided information on the annual maintenance symposium and pointed out that it will include several sessions on additive manufacturing including the AM Town Hall which is the very first session at 8:00 – 10:00 am on day one 5 December. The symposium will be conducted from Dec 5-8 at the Albuquerque Convention Center. For more information go to sae.org/dod
2016 Maintenance Innovation Challenge (MIC) – Greg Kilchenstein reminded everyone that the deadline for submissions is September 14, 2016. This year the audience will have the opportunity to select the 2016 Maintenance Innovation Challenge People’s Choice award from the finalists presenting at the symposium.
