AMMO Monthly Meeting

 

AMMO WG Teleconference Minutes – 2 November 2022

 

 

On 2 November 2022, the Additive Manufacturing Maintenance Operations (AMMO) working group conducted a teleconference with approximately 40 participants. A summary follows:

 

Introduction:  Marc Sharp (NCMS) welcomed the group, provided an overview of the agenda, and introduced the first presenter.

 

Metal Components from Hybrid Additive Manufacturing – Slade Gardner (Big Metal Additive) described the advantages of using additive hybrid metal and discussed several projects that Big Metal Additive are currently working. He displayed a Navy SBIR Phase II project to rapidly design and produce full scale metal unmanned underwater vehicle pressure components. Seven pressure vessels were built and exceeded expectations upon testing.  It is TRL 7 validated.

 

Cold Spray Pop-Up Production Cell– Jeff Campbell (NAVSEA) stated that pop-up production cells provide an ability to implement technologies quickly in an agile manner to provide immediate effect. Technology transition time is reduced, and it offers agility to renew and mature. The pop-up cell repaired 3 elevation shafts, that were previously unrepairable, at a savings of $30K each. They also repaired 2 large valve discs in 4 and 7 days with a savings of $70K each.

 

America Makes Mx and Sustainment Advisory Group (AMMSAG) Update – Todd Spurgeon (America Makes) provided an update that included the following:

  1. Provided a review of the TRX Meeting in Oct 18-19 at Huntsville, AL
  2. Mentioned AMNOW successes that support Army readiness through a robust digital AM supply chain.
  3. The visual light processing project has passed FHA regulations.

  5. Marilyn Gaska stated that they continue to work with AM Workshop Groups.

 

MxD Update – Federico Sciammarella, MxD, stated that MxD is hosting the December 13 Technology Showcase and Interoperability Workshop in Chicago, IL. This public, in-person event will include technology demonstrations, panel discussions, networking with industry leaders, and an overview of some of MxD’s most unique projects.

Joint Additive Manufacturing Working Group (JAMWG) – The JAMWG will meet on Thursday December 8th at the Defense Manufacturing Conference (DMC) in Tampa, FL.

 

Next Meeting: – The frequency of the AMMO WG calls is going to change to a quarterly basis in 2023.  The next AMMO WG call is TBD.
